macOS Tahoe window management — what changed

Apple expanded macOS window management in Tahoe. Does that make Rectangle redundant — or still essential?

What's new in Tahoe

macOS Tahoe builds on the window tiling foundation Apple introduced in Sequoia. The major additions include expanded drag-to-snap zones along screen edges, improved multi-display awareness, and better integration between Stage Manager groups and window tiling presets.

Apple also made it easier to create two-window and four-window tiled arrangements directly from Mission Control — a gesture-first approach that competes more directly with Magnet's drag-to-snap workflow.

Rectangle on Tahoe

Rectangle App is actively maintained and was updated for Tahoe compatibility quickly after release. The Rectangle community typically ships compatibility updates within days of Apple's major macOS releases, which is one of the practical advantages of its open-source development model.

Rectangle's keyboard shortcut approach doesn't overlap with Apple's expanded drag-to-snap — they operate on different input modes. Users who prefer the keyboard lose nothing from Tahoe's additions; in fact the combination of Tahoe's improved Stage Manager and Rectangle's shortcut layer is the best dual-use setup yet.

Should you still use Rectangle?

The verdict

Yes — Tahoe improves snapping but doesn't add keyboard shortcuts

Apple's window management improvements in Tahoe are welcome, but they remain gesture and mouse-driven. Rectangle App adds the keyboard shortcut layer that macOS still doesn't have natively — thirds, quarters, cycling sizes, multi-display shortcuts, and more.

Install both: use Tahoe's built-in tiling when you're mousing around; use Rectangle when you want to keep your hands on the keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rectangle compatible with macOS Tahoe?

Yes — Rectangle is updated for macOS Tahoe. Check the Rectangle App download page for the latest version compatible with your system.

Does Tahoe add keyboard shortcuts for window snapping?

macOS Tahoe improves drag-to-snap and the traffic-light tiling menu but does not add default keyboard shortcuts for snap positions. Rectangle still provides the full shortcut layer.

Will Apple eventually make Rectangle unnecessary?

Apple is gradually improving window management but each year stops short of a full keyboard-shortcut system. Until Apple adds native snap shortcuts for halves, thirds, and quarters, Rectangle App remains the essential complement.
