How to manage multiple monitors on Mac with Rectangle

Rectangle turns multi-monitor Mac setups from chaotic to controlled. Here's how to move, snap, and organise windows across displays.

Display setup

Before configuring Rectangle, set your display arrangement in System Settings → Displays → Arrange. Drag the display thumbnails to match your physical layout. Rectangle respects this arrangement when moving windows between screens.

Move windows between displays

The default Rectangle shortcuts for display switching are:

  • ⌃⌥⌘→ — Move to Next Display
  • ⌃⌥⌘← — Move to Previous Display

These move the active window to the adjacent display and resize it proportionally.

Pro workflow: Move a window to the next display (⌃⌥⌘→) and immediately snap it (⌃⌥←) to fill the left half — all without touching the mouse.

Multi-display layouts

A common layout for developers using Rectangle App:

  • Primary display: Editor (Left Two-Thirds) + Terminal (Right Third)
  • Secondary display: Browser (Left Half) + Documentation (Right Half)

Set this up once and recall it in seconds with four key presses. Rectangle Pro adds the ability to save named multi-display presets and restore them with a single shortcut.

Frequently asked questions

Does Rectangle support three or more monitors?

Yes — Rectangle cycles through all connected displays with the Next/Previous Display shortcuts. The free tier handles any number of monitors.

Can I snap to the same position on every display at once?

Not simultaneously in the free version — you snap one window at a time. Rectangle Pro's display presets let you save and restore a full multi-display arrangement with one action.

Does Rectangle work with Apple's Sidecar?

Yes — Sidecar creates a virtual display that macOS treats like any connected monitor. Rectangle App can move and snap windows to it normally.
