What writers need
Writing workflows oscillate between two modes: deep-focus drafting (just the writing app, nothing else) and research mode (browser or notes beside the draft). Setting up each mode manually is a creative interruption that breaks flow.
Rectangle App makes mode-switching instant. One shortcut maximises your writing app; another splits it beside your research browser. The transition takes less than two seconds and keeps your hands on the keyboard.
Writer layouts with Rectangle
Deep-focus mode: Press ⌃⌥↵ to maximise your writing app (Ulysses, iA Writer, Scrivener, Bear, Obsidian). No distractions, full screen — without entering a macOS full-screen Space.
Research mode: Press ⌃⌥← on your writing app and ⌃⌥→ on your browser. Perfect 50/50 split for writing with sources visible.
Notes-plus-draft: Use thirds — writing app on Left Two-Thirds (⌃⌥E), notes on Right Third (⌃⌥G). Keeps references always visible without dominating the screen.
Focus mode
Rectangle pairs naturally with macOS Focus modes. Set up a Writing Focus that allows only your writing app, use Rectangle to maximise it, and combine with Do Not Disturb for a complete distraction-free session.
When you exit focus mode, Rectangle's Restore shortcut (⌃⌥⌫) returns every window to where it was before — no manual repositioning needed.
Frequently asked questions
Does Rectangle work with iA Writer distraction-free mode?
iA Writer's focus mode is independent of window position. Use Rectangle to maximise the iA Writer window first, then activate iA's internal focus mode — they work perfectly together.
Is Rectangle useful for Scrivener users?
Yes — Rectangle positions the Scrivener window; Scrivener manages its internal editor, binder, and inspector panes. A common setup: Scrivener Left Two-Thirds, research browser or notes Right Third.
Can Rectangle help with Pomodoro-style writing sessions?
Indirectly yes. Combine Rectangle App shortcuts to switch rapidly between focus (maximised writer) and break (restore all windows) states. Some writers also use Rectangle with BetterTouchTool to trigger layout changes from a Stream Deck.
