Julia Johnson began playing her self-penned tunes in Canberra's venues as soon as she was old enough to enter them. She quickly surrounded herself with some of Canberra's finest musicians, resulting finally in Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens. With undeniable comparisons to a more fragile voiced Vikki Thorn from Australian super-group The Waifs, Julia’s Aussie tinged pronunciation and captivating voice float perfectly over the groups polished instrumental arrangements.
Together they weave a unique blend of nu-folk, alt-country, pop and rock, which was collected together into their first self-titled album. The album has so far enjoyed brilliant reviews, not to mention numerous plays on JJJ. The opener, Knots In My Hair, is a soft, endearing acoustic track which gives the listener a false sense of security as to how the album may be heading. From there, the group spirals through a mixture of styles including country, jazz and rock, all imbued with the strong folk undertones.
On stage they have played alongside Kate Miller-Heidke and were scheduled to play at Peats Ridge Music Festival alongside some of Australia's top acts until its wet weather cancellation. NYE saw them take to the stage for the Chief Minister's New Year's Eve Concert in the city.
2008 will see them spreading their dynamic and mesmerizing melodies relentlessly across the land, so keep an ear out, wherever you are!
